Prologue

To the tune of the same name

The Scene: Hogwarts, circa 997. GODRIC GRYFFINDOR is squaring off with SALAZAR SLYTHERIN as a CHORUS of their students watches the proceedings in awe.

CHORUS
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uhhhh
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uhhhh

SALAZAR
Step down, step down
Unless you wish my wrath.

GODRIC
Step down, step down
You're on the losing path.
I've killed no one
And you have gone too far!
Step down, step down
You're evil, Salazar!

SALAZAR
You amuse me,
You see that from my grin
Step down, step down
You've lost to Slytherin!

GODRIC
I know you're wrong,
I know I'll win this fight

SALAZAR
Step down, step down
The dark has beat the light.
You pit your heart
Against my arts
Now you're dead!

Step down, step down
Unless you wish my wrath
Of destruction
I've cut a bloody swath.
Because from blood
You wouldn't pick and choose
Step down, step down
Your house will always lose!
Now, let's see Gryffindor, have you really learned?
Play games with me and you will soon get burned.
You know what I mean?

GODRIC
No! Now leave the school!

SALAZAR (coolly)
No.
You've lost this fight, you old fool!
You love our foes!

GODRIC
I don't hate Muggle-borns.

SALAZAR
You think they're good!

GODRIC
I don't see how they're not.
My sister, she was born a squib.
Where is the shame there?

SALAZAR
You will learn of shame
Unless you give me control of the school.

GODRIC
I'd rather give a ruddy dragon which eats kids control of the school!
I know well what you did
You ought to be burnt up or hung,
You filthy serpent-tongue!

SALAZAR
My name is Salazar!

GODRIC (fires off a spell)
And Slytherin,
You will not take this school
You will not cow me,
Evil serpent-tongue!

SALAZAR
Because from blood
You wouldn't pick and choose
Step down, step down
Your house will always lose!
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh
Ahhh
Ahhh
Ahhh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uhhh!

GODRIC fires a spell which sends him keeling backwards, knocking his wand from his hand. GODRIC then deftly corners him, pointing both wands at him. SALAZAR scrambles back until GODRIC tosses his wand to him, still pointing his wand at his head. SALAZAR gives him a fierce grimace of rage and disapparates away to a small cabin. He crosses to the door and sings.

SALAZAR
Hogwarts is lost…
The school is weak.
I lose this fight.
My house is damned.
And I'm damned too. The world will hate me.
I must resist. I must fight back.
Never let up on my attacks.
Brook no mudbloods, good or bad.
They are the worst fools our school had.
The school is lost
And now I hate
My former friend,
Now second rate!

(grimly) He'll have to go
I'll get my vengeance somehow
Perhaps within the future,
If I don't get it now.
He gave me a scowl
When I made too much sense
He thought my thoughts weren't worth sixpence!

GODRIC's voice echoes accusingly.

GODRIC
You killed the kids!
I saw you and your damn snake
How can you claim our suspicion was a mistake?

SALAZAR
Now my own school is shut and barred
With my best friend in rage I've sparred, it isn't fair.
For I know that all Muggle-borns
Are simply stupid!
Hogwarts, they should not be there!
I can read their useless minds:
"My parents hate your kind."

Flashback: The young SALAZAR is running from a crowd of angry villagers, trying to kill him. A PRIEST leads them.

PRIEST
Track down the witch!
You shall not let his kind live!
They're demons, you can tell that
God won't want us to forgive!

SALAZAR
Why this hatred for me?
Why this constant alarm?
They see how young I am!
Why do they wish me harm?
I'll leave this town
Or feel the lick of the flame
I'm really not a demon, but
I take that blame.

Return to adult SALAZAR

SALAZAR
I know their vicious attitudes
With their St. Michaels and their Judes,
It is their God!
The magic coursing through my veins
Which is the cause of all my pains
It is their God!
Stigmatized,
Love I do lack,
Their hatred on my back.

Flashback to when GODRIC and SALAZAR first met, immediately after SALAZAR's flight from the peasants. SALAZAR has run through the marshes and hidden next to GODRIC's hut. The young GODRIC is chopping a tree outside and spots the bedraggled SALAZAR.

GODRIC
Hey, you there, are you in trouble?
Is somebody on your tail?
You've been walking in the marshes,
And you look so bloody pale!
I can help you if you want it
My name's Godric Gryffindor
Both my parents are away now,
Come on, nothing bad's in store.

SALAZAR (adult, voice over)
He gave me clothes and food,
I was his dearest friend.
The feeling I had then
Was better than all life.
In that one awful night,
A nightmare without end,
Yet I was truly saved.
By that fool I was saved!
He did his bit of good,
I still am grateful, too,
But that is all gone by.
But now he is my foe,
And he's that on his own.
With each moment,
Our hate's grown!

Flashback to a scene of argument over admissions at Hogwarts. SALAZAR and GODRIC are in a heated argument.

SALAZAR
We cannot admit the filthy
And the ones of common blood!
They have dirty body fluids,
And their veins all run with mud.
And, if you think they're trustworthy
You must be so damn naïve!
Your forgiveness of the Muggles and these filth I can't believe!

GODRIC
Salazar, you are too bitter.
There is nothing with these kids.
You were chased off by the Muggles,
That's not something these folks did!
We must let them have true access
To the way we educate
There's no proper place for learning,
If one mixes it with hate.

SALAZAR
Mark my words about this, Godric!
They will know only my scorn.
I refuse to think in honor
Of a single Muggle-born!
And my house will not admit them,
I will never let them in.
You can take them and embrace them!
I will not in Slytherin!

Death of Slytherin

To the tune of Valjean's Soliloquy

Flash forward to the present day SALAZAR, who raises his wand to his temple and addresses the air.

SALAZAR
Your fight is won,
Fool Godric, your fight is won!
And if it's you who decides
That Muggle-borns we won't shun…
Oh, have we dropped to such lows
To such atrocitous fates…
That nothing remains
But the school's worst of states?
Degraded in blood, degraded in soul
In a school which has played such a great role!
If there is reason in that louse,
He wouldn't take scum into his house.
My life has been fraught with their just homicide
My body was living, but Salazar died
When they told me that I'd burn in hell
Just for casting the simplest spell!

Yet, why did I allow Godric
To bring salvation to my mind?
He treated me well of his free will
He called me his friend,
I knew no evil.
But all those days I've left behind.
It is too late!
For I have come to hate the kids,
The kids of those who showed me hate!
The ends justify means
Morals do not exist!
This is what I have lived by,
This is why I'm not missed!
One curse from me and he'd be dead
I'd hold the school as mine instead.
But, as I was prepared to kill him
I felt a shame destroy my hate and rage
I told him Muggles had no worth!
Did he not know?
Now my pain nothing can assuage,
And now my hatred seems to grow!
I feel evil, but I'm right.
Darkness eats me from within,
And I stare at Satan's face,
As reflected by my grin.
I'll escape now from my pain,
From the world of Gryffindor
Gryffindor has won this fight,
One day he'll lose to Slytherin!

(whispers) Avada Kedavra!

The scene fades out.

In the House of the Gaunts

To the tune of At the End of the Day

The scene changes to 900 or so years in the future, in the hovel where MORFIN, MARVOLO and MEROPE Gaunt live. OGDEN has just arrived, and MARVOLO has begun his rant about purebloodedness.

MARVOLO
In the house of the Gaunts, you learn how to be bullied
And that's how we behave to a mudblood Auror!
We're in trouble, say no more
'Cause we won't leave here without a struggle
One more curse straight to your face, get out before
You wind up like that Muggle!
In the House of the Gaunts, our bloodline won't be sullied!
We won't brook no intruders, or Muggles or shit
Simply put, out of our way
Otherwise some help you'll be needing
Because even though we are inbred, we are still fit
To leave you dead and bleeding!
In the house of the Gaunts, we are like our forefathers!
We keep Slytherin's ring glistening on our hands!
Even though the world will change
Our intolerance can't be abated
You may think our evil's strange,
But there's nothing to stop our blind hatred
Scum like you are nothing we want
In the house of the Gaunts!

MEROPE
In the house of the Gaunts, you are sad and defeated
Every error you make gets a curse to the ribs.

MARVOLO
Get out, Ogden, while you can
We can kill you quick, that is no fib
And you're lucky that you're still alive!

MEROPE drops a pot

You filthy squib!
Pick it up, useless strumpet!

MORFIN (to a snake)
Have you seen how Merope is longing today?
With her look out the door every time there's a horse?
It's because stupid Riddle is coming this way,
But she wouldn't dare admit to that love, of course!
Because dad, he doesn't know
That Merope just wants to escape
If my sis doesn't behave,
Watch what she does,
She'll be beat out of shape!

MARVOlO
In the house of the Gaunts, we will just welcome purebloods!
You can't summon my son to some hearing, you clod!
You had better have your wand
'Cause my curses right now I'm rehearsing.

OGDEN
If you think I won't respond,
You are simply too proud of your cursing.
Your ancestry you over-flaunt
In the house of the Gaunts!

MORFIN
Papa, you should know something about my sister
You won't believe that right under your nose
She stares at a filthy Muggle all day
She likes looking at him,
She loves him, God knows!

MEROPE
Morfin, you're telling lies
I am not staring at him!
Don't make papa so mad, he will kill me, I'm sure!
Is there any way I
Can persuade you to shush,
Tell him that I'm no traitor,
I wish to stay pure?

MORFIN cackles and turns back to MARVOLO.

MARVOLO
Will you shut up and say your bit?
What was your sniveling all about?
I don't need more work with this Auror.
You stupid children, shut your traps!
I have this Auror to expel
I have to get rid of the sap!
I told you, Morfin, shut your mouth
Don't make me lay a curse on you!

MORFIN
She's a blood traitor through and through!

MARVOLO is stunned and starts to listen

In the house of the Gaunts she is just a blood traitor!
There's a Muggle rides by who she looks at all day!
He's that posh one with the horse
Calling us and our hovel an eye-sore
You can bet she'd run off with him, she'd run away!
So, you see, it's important.

MARVOLO
Yes, I know which you mean,
It's the one you were cursing
And you say that my daughter looks at him with lust?
When she lives with the Slytherins, last of his line
And she knows how we hate?!
I will curse her to dust!

MORFIN
In the house of the Gaunts, she's a squib and she's useless
And there's trouble for us when disgrace hits this home!
While we're trying to remain pure,
She's the one lusting below her station
True, she hasn't much allure,
But that can change with an incantation!
She deserves much worse than our taunts
In the house of the Gaunts!

MARVOLO
I might have known the Squib was bad,
I might have known she had no worth
I might have guessed this dirty secret!
Ah yes, Merope, I can tell
You're a blood traitor straight from hell
I would've known, with your weak heart
That you would fall for that upstart!
And in the middle of this rut,
You'd run to Riddle like a slut!

MORFIN
She's disgracing our line and she's loving the scum
Just another blood traitor is what she'll become
She is living a lie!
She lives a lie!

MARVOLO (smiles menacingly at MEROPE)
Right, my dear.
Time to die.

At this moment, OGDEN arrives back with Ministry officials and arrests MARVOLO and MORFIN. The scene blacks out and flash forwards.

I Dared to Hope

To the tune of I Dreamed a Dream

MEROPE GAUNT, now left by her husband and wandering London, is just beginning to despair. Finally, in despair, she collapses in front of a musty old tavern: "The Sphynx's Riddle." Looking up at the word "Riddle," she sings of her despair.

MEROPE
There was a time when I was glad
And my father was kind
And our life was pleasant
There was a time when all we had
Was our locket and ring,
And we thought we weren't peasants.
There was a time…
Now it all has died.

I dared to hope I might know love
Even when life was harsh and empty
I endured every painful shove
I knew that I lived quite unkemptly.

But I, at least, was still a Gaunt
No matter how I was rejected
I listened to their awful taunts
Knowing that still, I was protected.

But Tom Riddle drove that out
Just by riding by our hovel
And he tore my home to shreds,
And he changed my hope to pain.

I slipped him potion with no doubt
That it, one day, would come to trouble
I let him free, and then, the lout…
He showed me nothing but disdain.

And still I hoped he might forgive
Or, at least, stay to help his child
I dared to hope that I might live
But I will die cursed and reviled!

I dared to hope my life could be
A life of joy and not of horror
A life where I could maybe win,
But hope is not for Slytherins…

Borgin and Burke

To the tune of Lovely Ladies

As luck would have it, MEROPE stumbles into Knockturn Alley, where she falls down in front of Borgin and Burke. An assemblage of SHADY CHARACTERS are passing by her into the shop, where BURKE is gleefully ringing them up.

BURKE
I smell money, galleons and knuts
Artifacts like these sell well, no ifs or ands or buts
Borgin and Burke
Always tightly packed
Filled with shady people looking for an artifact
What a clientele we do attract!

SHADY CHARACTERS
Borgin and Burke
Swimming with the sharks
Selling all the trinkets owned by wizards who are dark
Borgin and Burke
Waiting for the cash
Jealously they guard their massive evil item stash.
They're the saints of wizard eurotrash!

BURKE notices MEROPE and exits his register for a minute, banging on the window

BURKE
Get lost, tramp, go!
This place ain't public, y'know!

MEROPE
I'm here to sell
Something you might find worthwhile.

BURKE
What could you have?
A slut like you ain't worth shit!
Now beat it, bitch.
The customers you'll repel.
What, are you deaf?

MEROPE
Please, let me in…

BURKE
Not on my life.

MEROPE
Please hear me out.

BURKE
This talk is done
My dear, I have business to run!

He returns to the counter.

SHADY CHARACTERS
Borgin and Burke
Evil to the hilt
Eager for the bloody
If it's muddy blood that's spilt!

BURKE
Evil items, anything you need
I help out your hate if you will satisfy my greed
Small discount if you make people bleed!

MEROPE elbows her way into the shop

BURKE
Out of my hair!
The shit you've got, I don't care!

MEROPE
It's Slytherin's!
I swear, I'll show you the mark!

The SHADY CHARACTERS laugh

BURKE
I know those lies.
Quit griping, out of my shop!

MEROPE pulls the locket out

MEROPE
Just look at that!
It's even got the old S!

BURKE (shocked)
Just look at that…

MEROPE
Ten galleons…

BURKE
Just look at that…

MEROPE
Just pay the price,
Ten galleons.

BURKE
A price like that
I cannot shun!

He pays MEROPE the money and she departs. He stuffs the locket in a glass case and puts it up with a sign saying "1,000,000 galleons: Authentic locket owned by Salazar Slytherin."

SHADY CHARACTERS
Borgin and Burke

BURKE
What a bloody catch!

SHADY CHARACTERS
Borgin and Burke

BURKE
With an artifact like that she shouldn't have dispatched!

SHADY CHARACTERS (simulteneous with below)
Borgin and Burke
Borgin and Burke
Borgin and Burke
Borgin and Burke
Borgin and Burke
Borgin and Burke

BURKE (simulteneous with above)
Slyth'rin's locket!
Selling for a mil,
For a trinket like that anyone would gladly kill
Much less pay a ten gall-ee-on bill!

HEPZIBAH SMITH enters the shop and looks at the locket.

HEPZIBAH
Who ever sold that locket you've got?

BURKE
A little troll, just a big cross-eyed sot.

HEPZIBAH
A million gold seems a bit in excess.

BURKE
Don't give me that, I won't take nothing less.

HEPZIBAH
What a pity,
You had better keep it.
What a pity.

She moves toward the exit.

BURKE
Now, wait a minute, come back, Miss Smith!
I suppose it could be parted with.
I would take, say, 990 grand
Less than that and it will not leave my hand!
A small discount, I just hope you see
That small locket cost me quite dearly.

HEPZIBAH pays him with a cheque, takes the locket and leaves. As soon as she's gone, BURKE kisses the cheque and begins dancing joyfully behind the register.

BURKE
Perhaps this is
Less than it was worth
But it was worth more than all the artifacts on earth.
Easy money, almost makes me twitch
Buying off the locket from that stupid little witch
She is probably dead in a ditch!

A few blocks away, the sounds of the SHADY CHARACTERS are slower and more soft as MEROPE shudders next to a building.

SHADY CHARACTERS
Borgin and Burke,
Peddling tools from hell
Everything that hurts you
Is the merchandise they sell

MEROPE
Cruel people…
Is that just the norm?
Isn't there a soul out there
Who might be just and warm?
Will my future
Be a life of hurt?
Am I so disgusting to be treated just like dirt?
Someday may these filth receive their honest, just desserts!

She stumbles off into the night.

Merope Gives Birth

To the tune of Fantine's Arrest

MEROPE has stumbled up to the door of Mrs. COLE's orphanage and knocks on the door frantically. Mrs. COLE opens it.

COLE
What is it, dear?
Has something happened to you?

MEROPE
Isn't it clear?
My little baby is due.

COLE
Oh, dearie me,
Of course I see!
That is true.
Well, get on in. We'll get you somewhere to stay.

MEROPE
Is this a dream?
You'll give me aid?

COLE
You just come here.

MEROPE
Oh, Merlin, I feel so afraid

COLE
What's there to fear?
You had better get in if you're having your baby
A pregnancy cannot be taken in haste.
There isn't an if or a but or a maybe,
Not if you're pregnant and have been by God with a little child graced.

MEROPE
Oh God, he is kicking, what will happen next?
Even though I have gone through so much worse,
I've never been this vexed.

COLE
By Christ, you're way too far along
This kid could kill you off right quick,
You've gotta stick this bloody birth out,
Now get upstairs and be prepared!
We've got to move fast when the baby comes.

MEROPE
I need your help to walk those stairs,
I haven't rested once tonight.

COLE puts an arm under her and helps her up.

COLE
Now, let's be quick, and don't be scared.

Fifteen minutes later, MEROPE is going through labor.

COLE
Come on, dearie, keep on pushing
It'll all end in a bit
Just as soon as we've the baby,
You can rest and you can quit.

You should have arrived much sooner
Rather than do what you did
You could have been much more ready
Now we've got to save the kid.

My dear, I don't believe it
How you waited for so long
If your child started kicking,
Coming here so late was wrong.

Don't lament your silly actions
Save your strength to save the child
You may rest assured, m'dear
That the damage is but mild.

MEROPE
I can't take this painful moment!
Please, oh, God, just let me end
Merlin, can I not be happy?
I will die without a friend!

COLE
Come on, cease your exclamations
It's almost out, save your cries
I don't have stronger sedations
Close your mouth and close your eyes

It's a boy, there's no doubt
Now the child has come out!

MEROPE relaxes, panting. COLE is holding a baby RIDDLE, who wails.

MEROPE
Oh, let me hold the little child
I may be weak, but I'm still game.

COLE
You need to rest.

MEROPE
My child, put him in my arms
I've got to give the boy a name.

COLE
You need to rest.

MEROPE
Give him here!

COLE hesitantly hands RIDDLE to MEROPE.

COLE
How will she fare,
This girl who's known no care?
This poor young thing is odd
No girl looked so defeated
I shouldn't cause her grief when she's just had the babe.

MEROPE (stroking the child's head)
Oh, Tom, you gave me such a gift
It's far too hard for me to hate
When this young baby boy I can lift
And see its face, so strong and great.

(simultaneous with below) I will do all I can
I'll name my child Tom Riddle
If there were good in life,
I'd live to see him grow.

COLE (simultaneous with above)
Is this true, what she says?
This poor innocent girl.
So defeated and sad…

MEROPE (addressing RIDDLE)
Magic flows through you, both out and in,
Heir of Slytherin!

COLE
What does she mean?

MEROPE
Heir of Slytherin…

COLE
What does she mean?

MEROPE
Heir of Slytherin!

The baby wails out in a long, hissing noise

The Heir's First Word

To the tune of The Runaway Cart

The hiss goes on for a long time, while Mrs. COLE watches, horrified and MEROPE listens, transfixed. The baby's head begins to twist back and forth and then, slowly, a slight reddish tinge comes to the eyes.

COLE
Look at that!

MEROPE
Look at that!
My child speaks Parseltongue!
He's like me,
He's a wizard with magical blood.
He has all that he needs,
Oh, my beautiful boy.
He's a Gaunt,
He's like me,
He is Slytherin's heir…
He is Slytherin's heir…

Is there any way I can instruct him to speak?
Can I hear him say something in words of a snake?
Can he hear or understand?
He hasn't been living for long
Well, I can't do harm if I try,
With that nothing is wrong.

She begins hissing to the baby in Parseltongue. Most babies, naturally, are not intelligent enough to mimic the words of their parents, but this is Voldemort we're talking about. After a few minutes, he mimics her. As irony would have it, the word that he repeats from her happens to be "hate" in the context of the sentence "don't hate your father." COLE finally snaps out of her stunned state.

COLE
Can this be true?
I can't believe what I'm seeing.
This girl, this babe,
Who both can hiss in this way.

Don't understand,
What language is this they speak?
It's truly odd
What are they doing, by God?
It is too weird.
You need to rest right now, my dear.

MEROPE
Don't take my child.
Please leave him here.

COLE
I can't leave a little child
With a mother who's so weak
I can understand affection,
But of life or death we speak.

If I leave him with you right now,
He will not have sustenance
He will die if he is not fed
From the breast or such at once.

Well, of course, you want to keep him.
I expect that from a mum.
But if you hold to him like that,
Then dead is all he'll become.

MEROPE
I'm truly sorry, Mrs. Cole
I didn't want to be this kind of awful bother
Just please name him Tom Riddle, and
Add the name Marvolo, the name of his grandfather.
Treat him well
Make sure he knows
That I give him my love.

COLE You don't need to be so sorry
The whole reason we are here
Is to help young girls who're pregnant
Have their child in the clear.
Your strength you mustn't test
For now, dearie, you must rest.

Will I Live?

To the tune of Who Am I?

MEROPE is left alone with her thoughts as she sinks into the bed.

MEROPE
Can I survive this birth?
Do I have strength to live?
Can I go on with life…
Will God my sins forgive?
Why should I live in pain?
Why should I live this way?
When for so many crimes
Already I must pay.

If I die, to hell I'm sped
If I stay living, I'll feel dead.

I am the mother of a little child,
I'm slave to his need
Can I abandon him?
How would he live if he can't breast-feed?

If I die, to hell I'm sped
If I stay living, I'll feel dead.

Will I live?
Can I use magic to remain alive?
Pretend I've one desire to survive?
This innocent who needs my love,
If I despair, he'll get the shove.
Will I live?
Have I lost all my power to despair?
Do I not have the strength, do I not care?
And must my child forever cry
With no one there to dry his eye
Can't I die?
How can I ever face my maker then?
How can I ever face this world again?
My soul has not an ounce of worth,
It rots in hell or rots on earth
I have no hope to save my spawn
I have just horror and élan
Will I live?
Will I live?
I can't go on!

And so, my Tom, your life is bleak
I'd like to save you, but I'm weak.
Will I live?
No! My hope is gone!

She slowly lapses back on the bed and dies.

Dumbledore's Debriefing

To the tune of Fantine's Death

Eleven years in the future. DUMBLEDORE is hearing information from Mrs. COLE, now headmistress of the orphanage. She is discussing RIDDLE.

COLE
The boy is awfully weird

DUMBLEDORE
You mean he is a bully?

COLE
I think he has to be.
At least, he acts like one.
Weeks ago,
A rabbit was found hanging
I don't know…
He won't take no haranguing.
But that don't mean that I'm not suspicious
I think that boy's unnatural, and really rather vicious.
Secondly,
Dennis and little Amy
Tom, he says
"You really shouldn't blame me."
But they weren't
The same after vacation
It's almost like he bewitched them
With some odd incantation.

DUMBLEDORE
Mrs. Cole, I'll take him off your hands
Mrs. Cole, no worries about Tom.
He will come to Hogwarts, that's for sure.
Have no fear.
Have no fear anymore.

COLE
He's a mess.

DUMBLEDORE
I do not doubt his power.

COLE
Take him now.

DUMBLEDORE
Tom won't be back 'til summer.

COLE
Professor, thank goodness you will take him.

DUMBLEDORE
And he shall not harm anyone, so long as I am watching.

COLE
Go see him.
I'll show you to his lodgings.

DUMBLEDORE
By all means, Mrs. Cole.

COLE
Take young Tom.

DUMBLEDORE
To teach him I'll endeavor.
I'll play the teacher's role.

COLE
Send him back later than now, or never.

They arrive at RIDDLE's door.

COLE (cont)
Now here's his door, Professor, and good luck in meeting him.

COLE walks away and DUMBLEDORE stands, pensive at the door. After a short time, he opens the door and enters.

Invitation

To the tune of Confrontation

RIDDLE is sitting on his bed, reading a book. DUMBLEDORE approaches and sits next to him.

DUMBLEDORE
Well, Tom, I see
You are a quiet youth
I'm here to talk.

RIDDLE
You're lying!
Tell the truth!

DUMBLEDORE
Before you say another word, Riddle
Before you get to be suspicious, boy,
Listen to me.
I have something I must say.
I'm here to ask you to come up to a school
It is one for those who have special needs.

RIDDLE
You think I did all of those awful deeds!

DUMBLEDORE
I don't suspect.
I pledge my word.
I don't suspect.

RIDDLE
You fool, I'm not mad!
That old bat should be locked up!
I'm not mad-

DUMBLEDORE
I know that's true.
You are a wizard.

RIDDLE (layered on top of DUMBLEDORE)
A wizard, that's what I can do?
A wizard, that's what I can do?
Oh, Professor, thank you!
My power makes such sense!
I can do things, I can make other people hurt.
Oh, I see why you are here.
I'm no fool, I'll join your school!
You knew I could do such things
You will see to what extent.
I will show you all my strength
On power I am quite hell-bent!
You know nothing of my strength!
I'll use magic 'til I'm great.
I don't care if it is wrong
I'll not stay normal for long!

DUMBLEDORE (layered below RIDDLE)
Believe of it
What you will
There are some laws which you should know exist.
You know nothing of our world.
Join us all at Hogwarts school.
I will see you learn your place
You've been rotten to the core
But I will see your power curbed.
I must warn you, young Riddle
I'm a full-grown wizard now.
There is power you don't have
You'll soon see what it means.
I must warn you, young Riddle
You are not so powerful.
If I have to frighten you,
I will make a burning scene.

DUMBLEDORE sets the wardrobe on fire. The episode with the treasures commences. RIDDLE watches DUMBLEDORE go. DUMBLEDORE pauses on the other side of the door.

DUMBLEDORE
I will soon teach that boy what's right.

RIDDLE
I will avenge my injured pride…

DUMBLEDORE
His power's use has been ill-starred.

RIDDLE
He won't be so damn snide again.

DUMBLEDORE
I will soon teach him of the light.

BOTH
He'll learn respect, he'll learn it hard.

RIDDLE lets out a low hiss as DUMBLEDORE walks away from the door.

Castle on a Hill

To the tune of Castle on a Cloud

The scene switches to the Hogwarts Express as it pulls into the Hogwarts train station. RIDDLE steps gingerly off and stares up at the hills, a hungry look in his eyes.

RIDDLE
This is the castle on a hill
Where I shall learn how great I am
Whether I'm weak or worth a damn
Here in this castle on a hill.

I shall soon see my future start
I shall join wizard boys and girls
I'm gonna make them do my will
Here in this castle on a hill.

He gets in the boat.

Simple Professor, funny thing
How you took me under your wing
You gave me all that my hatred needs
I'll bite the hand that fed me 'til it bleeds!

As Hogwarts comes into view, he sings the following verse.

Here in this place, I'll get my pride
Here in this place, I'll fight to learn
Until of knowledge I've my fill
Here in this castle on a hill.

He waits for his turn at the Sorting Hat.

RIDDLE (cont)
Alright, let's get this going now.
I hope that hat can finish sorting and dividing us kids.
Oh, it's me. It's my turn.

He sits down on the stool under the HAT.

HAT
Now look at this, a lot of talent and drive
It seems that it's been used for things which aren't very good
Better not do that stuff here, it'll not get you friends
Sure, I can see how it's means for you to get your ends
It's clear to me, the house you ought to be in
Is plain and simply the house SLYTHERIN!

RIDDLE walks over to the Slytherin table, where the other SLYTHERINS eye him.

SLYTHERINS
Should we take this kid under our wing in the first place?
We can't be sure he is pureblood
But why would the sorting hat give us the scum?
Well, let's see, we will give him a chance to prove he is worth all of our time
If he's Muggle-born, then he'd better be strong and he'd better beware, because blood like that is a crime!
This Riddle boy, we hope that he's understood
That if he isn't pureblood, then we think he's no good.

RIDDLE (to himself)
They think I don't hear what they say?
I'll prove them all wrong, wait and see.
Foolish kids, they'll soon forget they said that
I'll show them all I'm not some simple Muggle-born brat!

Head of Slytherin

To the tune of Master of the House

The scene shifts to the Slytherin common room. The SLYTHERINS are crowded around the fire. RIDDLE is seated at a chair, apparently not caring that he's alone. A couple of PREFECTS walk I, accompanied by the fat form of Horace SLUGHORN.

PREFECTS
Alright, you first years
Sit down like your older peers.
Show some respect for your head
Professor Slug,
Respect for him you can't shrug
Or we'll curse you 'til you're dead.
He's an awesome head,
You'll be best of friends
Being your best pal
Is what he intends.

RIDDLE (to himself)
God, that man is really fat.
Not a square inch of him bends.

SLUGHORN
My newest first year crop,
You will soon be on top,
It's the right of Slytherins.
The year begins,
And this house always wins
When we use all of the sins.
Gryffindor's our foe
That's no mystery.
They make trouble
While we're making history!
They play a little rough,
But they're not so tough.

PREFECTS
The boss is right
He's got the bastards nailed.
It's out of sight
How often they have failed.
Our every act
Has them beat
All the time.
Being great is not a crime,
They're jealous of us.
So they always make a fuss.

SLUGHORN
If sport's for you,
Then you've got some things to do
Like go join the Quidditch team.
It makes me grin
That the folks in Slytherin
Get their aims, they don't just dream.
And about my club,
If you're really good,
Or you know someone
Who has awesome fame,
Just come by to my office
And I'll put down your name.

He walks up to the front of the room and begins to sing a sinuous little tune.

SLUGHORN
Slytherin friends,
Pull up a stool
And meet the best house head in the school
As for the rest,
They think they're great,
But their houses they just overrate.
Unlike all the rest,
Slytherin's the best -
Be curt, treat 'em like dirt
Make them hurt with zest!

Head of Slytherin,
That's my single job
Though some people think
I'm just an obese slob.
Make sure you're in line,
Lenient I am not,
If you have to break the rules,
Just don't get caught.
I hate taking points off students
Who come out of my dear house,
So keep to your devices,
Do not be a troublemaking louse.

Head of Slytherin,
Master of this crew
If you don't wise up or get a clue, you're through.
Show me deference,
Show me some respect
I will cover up if you
Become suspect.
If one of you gets in trouble,
Vengeance is like death and tax
Their blood you should be curlin',
Merlin! Power none of this house lacks.

SLYTHERINS
Head of Slytherin,
Always on his game,
Never wants a famous name
To throw him blame.
Teacher to the poor,
Lackey to the rich
If you're famous, rich, or both,
He'll be your bitch.
Everybody's favorite teacher,
Everybody's sycophant.
It gets our rivals hurlin',
Merlin, he does all that we may want.

SLUGHORN
Welcome, my friends
Don't be afraid
Vengeance and lies
Are tricks of the trade.
Violent acts
Are out of place,
But don't be pacifist,
Just in case…
Someone gives you flack
Someone gives you crap
They'll need to be attacked,
And we'll spring the trap.

Head is what I am,
Head of Slytherin.
Want me to just love you?
Then pretend I'm thin!
Flattery works well
Gifts are just as good
Nothing works like fame,
I want that understood.
Ministers have been my students
I've networked them to the top
Because they sent me pineapple and they never ever stopped!

Influence untold
Can be yours for gold
All that I can do for you can all be sold
Come and join the fold
Of the club of Slug
With all your connections,
Get all nice and snug.
When it comes to famous students,
I attract their kind in herds
Get your potions swirlin',
If they're really sterlin',
Merlin, you'll do well, kids, mark my words!

SLYTHERINS
Head of Slytherin
Making you his catch
Every single student
Who's got strength he'll snatch.
Teacher to the weak,
Lackey to the strong
If you're rich and famous
You can do no wrong.
Everybody's favorite teacher,
Teaches you to break the rules.

SLUGHORN
Futures I'm unfurlin'.
Merlin, I've got all the proper tools.

PREFECTS (to themselves)
He's really giving you a pleasant speech.
Though he's a teacher, there is nothing he will teach.
Head of Slytherin
He will never cease
Grovelling, when he can't stand
'Cause he's obese.
Cunning, ugly clod
Smashingly attired
If he weren't quite so old,
He would be fired.
You would think he'd be a teacher,
But he just likes to carouse
God knows how we've lasted learning with this fat old head of House!

ALL
Head of Slytherin

PREFECTS
Slughorn's lost his touch.

ALL
Master of the potions class -

PREFECTS
He eats too much!

ALL
Teacher to the meek,
Lackey to the brash.

PREFECTS
Corpulent and decadent old piece of trash!

ALL
Everybody loves old Slughorn,
Even with his seventh chin.

SLUGHORN
Everybody raise a cup!

PREFECTS
Hope you're good at sucking up!

ALL
Everybody raise a cup
To the Head of Slytherin!

RIDDLE's eyes light up.

The Slug Club/The Horcrux Waltz of Flattery

To the tune of The Bargain/The Thernardier Waltz of Treachery

The scene: Five years later. RIDDLE is sitting in the Slug Club, with SLUGHORN and other SLYTHERINS. Ghostly voices sing the "Castle on a Hill" tune as an intro.

RIDDLE
Professor Slughorn, is it true
That our old D.A.D.A. teacher is retiring?

SLUGHORN
Tom, if I knew, I couldn't say
And I am curious anyway
Where you learn all this.
I'm concerned
That you've discerned
What so few kids have learned.
You flatter people rather well
You have a knack for knowing things
This pineapple, how could you tell…
That it has always been my favorite?
Now, I don't mean to condone
What some people think improper,
But I must say I'm impressed.
I expect you to go far.
And if you wish to know something…

RIDDLE
Actually, I do, sir.

SLUGHORN
Then you have but to ask the question.
I'll be glad to help, I'm sure.

RIDDLE
You won't want to answer, though.

SLUGHORN
Balderdash!
Ask me, son.

RIDDLE
Of Horcruxes what do you know?

The music shifts into a sleazy waltz and SLUGHORN looks deeply uncomfortable.

SLUGHORN
Your request
Would make sense
If this were a project
For Defense.
But, you know…
That is dark
Not something that you ask on a lark.
What's the harm?
I'll tell you
What a Horcrux
Is supposed to do.
Making them is a sin,
But they stop you
From being done in.
In pursuit of that goal
A Horcrux should hold part of your soul…
Of your soul, you see.

RIDDLE
But how do you divide your soul?
I'm only curious, understand.

SLUGHORN
We should not talk about this too much, I fear.
The subject is forbidden here.
There's a spell
And it will
Encase part of your soul
When you kill.
If fulfilled,
The strong willed
Will not die when their body is killed.
But existing in that state
It's a totally horrible fate.
It's the worst of all crimes…

RIDDLE
Could you split your soul multiple times?
Seven times,
Seven parts?
Wouldn't your strength be right off the charts?

SLUGHORN
Good God, boy,
It's dark stuff!
Isn't killing one person enough?
Seven parts of your soul?
That's a twisted and horrible goal!
Listen, Tom, that's too much
This discussion is too dark as such.

RIDDLE nods and leaves, striding through the hallways. He is thoroughly elated.

RIDDLE
For this goal I must strive…
Killing seven so I'll stay alive.
I can win any fight
Against Dumbledore's pathetic light.
This plan I won't abort
I will live on as Lord Voldemort!

He walks off into the hall and the scene fades, swirling slowly until a new scene appears, this one five years in the future. It is RIDDLE's interview with DUMBLEDORE. They are sitting across the table from each other and looking uncomfortable. We can hear what they're thinking.

Back Down

To the tune of Look Down

RIDDLE
(Back down
For I shall infiltrate your school
Back down, for you shall lose to Voldemort!
Back down, you frail and oversoft old fool.
Back down, back down, my time is running short.)
Well, Dumbledore, it's quite a loss
If you don't let me come and teach
Back when old Dippet was the boss
He said the job was out of reach.
But I don't think I'd breach propriety
Teaching Defense against Dark Arts
I know the arts in great variety.

DUMBLEDORE
And that is where the trouble starts.
You have much you can show
Loving, though,
You don't know!

RIDDLE
(Back down,
Your love is utterly inane
Back down,
Back down,
Or I shall show you pain!)
Love, I do not know
If I need research
Here at Hogwarts there's a lot a man like me could learn.

DUMBLEDORE
You don't want to, though
You just want to search
For a bunch of students who, like you, will goodness spurn.

RIDDLE
What are you about?
You have got no proof.
Why this harsh reaction?
Why have you become aloof?

DUMBLEDORE
Down at the Hog's Head
Don't you have some friends?
A bunch of these "Death Eaters"
Who will help you reach your ends?

RIDDLE
Well, I'm not surprised
You know all, of course
But, you know, the Dark Arts aren't something they endorse.
Not at all
Not at all
Not at all
Not at all
Not at all…

DUMBLEDORE
You are the leader of that band
You call yourself Lord Voldemort
You are allied with evil men,
Dark wizards of the darkest sort.

RIDDLE
Listen, Dumbledore
I don't need your blame
I will not deny that Voldemort
Is now my name.
But what is in a name?
In a name?
In a name?
In a name?
In a name?

DUMBLEDORE
You won't deny the change of name
But you won't admit to the crimes
When I could burn a wardrobe up
And frighten you, those were good times.
But now you've grown up into something bad.
You think you'll get a job? You're mad!

There is a highly pregnant pause in which RIDDLE looks like he might reach for his wand.

RIDDLE
This is your final answer, sir?
You will not let me have the job?
Well, I'm insulted, that's for sure.
But, if that's all, I'll shut my gob.
You have no reason for refusing me
Other than rumors that you've heard!
I will not stand for you abusing me,
On a basis that's so absurd!
(Undeterred,
I'll be back!
I'll attack!
I'll attack!
Back down,
For this position I have earned.
Back down,
Back down,
You'll see I won't be spurned!)

The Dispatch

To the tune of The Robbery

DOLOHOV, ROOKWOOD, MULCIBER, KARKAROFF and GOYLE are waiting in the Hog's Head. RIDDLE stomps in and they crowd around him.

RIDDLE Everyone here?
Sit right back down!
Igor, Rookwood, Goyle!
You, Dolohov, keep watch outside with Mulciber!
Be sure no one hears the tale
Make sure you don't fail!
That bloody codger Dumbledore,
With all his bloody talk of love
He just refused and what is more,
He really gave me quite the shove.
Well, Dumbledore will see he's wrong
He should've known how much I know
He won't be Headmaster for long
That crackpot fool will have to go!
We will leave Hogsmeade quick enough
And then we'll hit the Knockturn Street
And if the going gets too rough,
We will show all our foes defeat.

KARKAROFF
Lord Voldemort, what can we do?
We all expected you'd be hired.

RIDDLE
Don't interrupt me, Karkaroff!

KARKAROFF (hastily)
I just meant success we all desired
When with your plan we have conspired…

RIDDLE
Well, that's quite nice
But shut your trap
I do not want to talk.
Don't mention it,
Or you'll know pain.
I thought I'd get the job
But that bastard thought me quite the slob.
Now, listen up
Here is the plan
Get settled in.
Soon we'll attack.

We haven't done enough for power.
Now, my friends, it's the day
To destroy those who are in our way
We'll recruit, we will win
We'll pluck children straight from Slytherin.
Every kid who's been hurt
Will be taught that they're not just worth dirt
Voldemort still will teach
To those children in our house I'll preach!
Yes, it's true, they'll be glad
Oh, my friends, I will still have my way
I will teach, I will teach, if it's only to slay.
Their whole minds I'll distort,
They'll adore Voldemort.

Another plan they can't thwart -
More kids with whom to cavort
If they feel like they're disliked
They'll come to Lord Voldemort
My friends, the students are ours
They'll all have come to my court
And all our fights will be won!

It'll be a fine collection, who all come from Slytherin
This swarm of thugs and misfits who will swear themselves to sin.
I know we've nothing to fear
I know our plan has been made
We shall have power, that's clear
And we'll make others afraid.
Yes, soon our foes shall be dead
And we'll be winning instead.

MULCIBER
You will have a job to beat them
What with Dumbledore on top
It'll take more to unseat them
Than a measly student crop.

RIDDLE
You must show a bit more patience
If you want to win this fight
It has always been endurance
That makes darkness beat the light.
And the people Dumbledore has
Cannot cast a dark arts curse
They might think their love can save them,
But their love's a one-way hearse!
In the absence of the students,
My Death eaters, we should go
But remember, it's imprudent
To waltz into Hogwarts, though.
Let our foes think they are winning
We will let them have their fun
When the time comes, they'll be sobbing
When Lord Voldemort has won!

The other DEATH EATERS Apparate away.

Spite

To the tune of Stars

RIDDLE hesitates outside the Hog's Head, looking up at the outline of Hogwarts with a mix of longing and hate.

RIDDLE
There…out, beyond Hogwarts,
Two races are mixing
No longer pure, no longer good
By my ancestor, I never shall stop
'Til my hate's understood…
'Til my hate's understood…

My blood's corruption is foul
It is the blood of the weak…
Those who've managed to keep themselves proper
Are those that I seek…
For if one falls, as my mother fell…
They're up the creek!

Spite…born of Slytherin…
Scarce to be measured…
Filling this school up with power and hate…
I will not fail you,
Soon Muggle-borns
Will meet a deathly fate!
Will meet a deathly fate!

This hatred that I now nurse
Has cast me in a great role
In acting that part, I shall split and distort
What was once my one soul...
For, if I fall as my mother fell,
I've failed my goal.

And so I shall be, for so I am dreaming
That with purebloods I shall cavort,
And they shall worship my very name:
Lord Voldemort!

(takes a breath) Dumbledore, old fool
This slight I'll never…
Ever forgive!
You shall not forget!
Never!
For, through death…
For, through death I…shall live!

He raises his hand to his burned, distorted features and lets out a cold, cruel laugh.

Dumbledore, you think you're something,
But it's me who'll take your place
And the mudbloods will be murdered
And I'll show your side disgrace.
Voldemort soon shall win
You shall lose to Slytherin!

He Apparates away. The scene changes to 30 years later. The scene is a nondescript Potions lab and SEVERUS Snape is sitting at a table, looking dejectedly at a picture of a woman with flaming red hair waving up at him.

Severus' Lament

To the tune of Eponine's Errand

SEVERUS
Lily…how could you choose him?
Lily…where'd you go wrong?
I thought you would refuse him
That hope did not last long.

Good God, she's born of Muggles
This girl is below me
And in Voldemort's struggles
There isn't room for she.
Voldemort…without him I'm a greaseball who is hideous
If he wins, I'll get my way even if it's insidious.
I know it's so villainous, but God knows there's no other way
I joined him with willingness, yes, I am glad I'm in his sway
Voldemort…he knows I'm smart
He's got all that I want
I need to stay the course,
Stay with his Dark Arts force.
My Lord…he's all I ever need.

Looks at the picture.

Well, except for her.
But that just drives my spur,
That I for her have such a greed.

He suddenly feels his arm burn and rushes out of the lab and Apparates away.

Green and Grey

To the tune of Red and Black

VOLDEMORT is receiving reports from his Death Eaters, among them DOLOHOV, MULCIBER, LESTRANGE and NOTT.

DOLOHOV
Voldemort!
In London, us Death Eaters did our work.

MULCIBER
Three Muggles dead and nobody suspects!

NOTT
We've been quiet as can be
Skirted all the Ministry
And beyond the fools who die,
We've some fingers in the pie!

VOLDEMORT
Our time is come,
It's come to make Slytherin once more the king.
We'll kill the scum!
We'll soon be running everything.
Those who fight for the light are not easily cowed,
With their champion, Dumbledore, whom we must kill.
Oh, it's easy to talk about how we will win,
But a small pureblood movement is all we are, still!
We need our mark
To rally the purebloods,
To alert dark wizards
That we too are dark.

SNAPE rushes in, looking flustered.

VOLDEMORT (cont)
Severus, you're late!

SEVERUS
I'm sorry, sir.
I had some matters to attend.

VOLDEMORT
Well then, come give us your report.

SEVERUS
The prophecy Trelawney made
Concerns your future, I'm afraid.
Your future downfall, Voldemort.

VOLDEMORT
You idiot!
Don't use my name!
This news is troubling all the same.
Whoever thought I could be beat?
Such a prophecy's never lied.

SEVERUS
A couple who has thrice denied
Your power will cause your defeat.

VOLDEMORT looks pensive for a few seconds and then starts singing again.

VOLDEMORT
It is time for us all to decide on our plan.
We must strive to survive, we're alive, but that's not good enough.
Have you asked of yourselves
Would you brave Azkaban?
Are we simply a club
Who won't do what we can?
Opponents of my mark
Are rising…man by man.

Green…the venom of a snake
Grey…the stony gaze of death
Green…the death curse from our wand
Grey…the fog of dying breath!

SNAPE
Had you been there tonight,
Had you known what I heard,
You'd take caution, my Lord, in your choice of which wizard to kill.
For you to win this fight,
You must also be sure
That the child you kill
Will be strongest in the light
Someone whose parents are
Unusually bright.

DEATH EATERS
Green…

VOLDEMORT
A serpent's glistening scales

DEATH EATERS
Grey…

VOLDEMORT
The chains that we shall break!

DEATH EATERS
Green…

VOLDEMORT
The house which never fails…

DEATH EATERS
Grey…

VOLDEMORT
The house that makes them quake!
Severus, you've been helpful, of course
I do not doubt what you have said
But now I must choose who to kill
Who cares about the Longbottoms,
Contemptible blood traitor bums…
The Potters must fall to my skill!

ALL
Green…the snake of Slytherin
Grey…the fangs within its maw
Green…the venom in those teeth
Grey…the death of wizard law!

VOLDEMORT
Lily and James are hiding very well
We cannot find them anywhere at all

PETTIGREW gives a squeak

Wormtail, keep your blabber shut!
Who will help me find their house?

SEVERUS
If it means the death of James,
Put me on your list of names.

VOLDEMORT
Well, Severus has volunteered, that's good.
Will anyone else step up to the plate?
A Death Eater must be found…

PETTIGREW
Listen!

VOLDEMORT (ignoring him)
Someone volunteer to help!
Don't hold back your services.
(to PETTIGREW) Silence, stupid little whelp!

PETTIGREW (spoken)
No, I won't be quiet!

VOLDEMORT raises his wand.

PETTIGREW (spoken)
I know where the Potters are hiding!

VOLDEMORT (stunned)
You know their place?
You know where they hide themselves from my wrath?
Their hidey-hole?
Their home? Wormtail, show me the path!
On this glorious day, you will soon see the end
I shall soon have my place in the world's history.
In the death of my foes, no more shall I defend.
There will be none that can bring down destruction on me.
At last, we'll see!
Let us welcome our soon-to-be grand victory!
Let us go to the house with no doubt of our cause!
Let us nip my defeat's genesis in the bud.
Let our wands run with blood!

Do You Hear the Serpents Hiss?

To the tune of Do You Hear The People Sing?

VOLDEMORT (to his Death Eaters)
Do you hear the serpents hiss?
Hissing resentment, rage and hate?
It is the hissing of the students
Who all wish to become great!
When our darkness starts to rise,
We'll show our power and, in short
We will have the Slytherins fight with Lord Voldemort!

SEVERUS
How could I have known this truth?
That he'd interpret it this way?
That my dear Lily and her child would be
The ones he would slay?
He'll spare her, he claims
But she'll stand up, like James, in his way!

ALL
Do you hear the serpents hiss?
Hissing with venom in their jaws?
It is the hissing of predators
Who will soon unsheath their claws.
When the power we obtain
Is based on killing fools for sport,
There isn't one thing we can't do for Lord Voldemort!

LESTRANGE
We will go to Azkaban
So that the Dark Mark stays its course
Voldemort, you brilliant man,
Your power we will all endorse.
They won't give us power for nothing, so we will use force!

ALL
Do you hear the serpents hiss?
Hissing and biting all they touch?
It is the hissing that shows our foes
That hatred can count for much!
When the power of our mark
Is such that we will clearly win,
We will bring the honor back to
House Slytherin!

Godric's Hollow

To the tune of Rue Plumet

The scene shifts. We are now in Godric's Hollow. LILY and JAMES POTTER are sitting around a crib, looking at their baby and cuddling with each other. SEVERUS is sitting at the window, listening sadly to what they say.

LILY
How great,
This feeling that our love has run its course.
This state
Of loving you without too much remorse.
Oh, our child is lovely, James.
We must raise him to love the light,
To fight for what is good,
To fight for what is right.
In our life, there are so many problems and people that we cannot trust
In our life, there are choices that we make that hurt though we know that we must.
But not now.
To have Harry hurt we cannot allow.
It would be far too awful, far too low-brow.
We must keep him alive, now that he has been born
We must show him no hate, we must teach him no scorn.
In our life, we're together at last.
And the boy that we have will be great.
He will have quite a fate.

JAMES
Dearest Lily, you're right about our child.
How clever, how strong he seems to me.
And really, though he's only a child,
I've never really smiled
So wide or happily,
When I see
Our little boy, our Harry.
There's so much he must grow if he's going to grow
Into someone who loves and is the Dark Lord's foe.
There's so much he must be
If he is to survive
If he is to do right
And also stay alive.
In all the light side's ways
Our child we must raise.
In our life, we no longer are young
And we must shoulder weight of our own.
'Til he has really grown.

LILY
You are right. We have stopped Voldemort in his darkest of crimes
In our times.

SEVERUS' face, practiced at Occlumency though he is, is already leaking out tears at the love he is hearing through the window.

SEVERUS
In my life, she was someone who always was friendly
And like me, was smart.
In my life, she was someone who, though I was bitter,
Was someone who captured my heart.
Oh, Lily, she was friendly and made me love,
Thanks to her I knew more than the bitterness of my hate.
And I saw to a world that was good, that was great.
But I never had strength just to ask for a date.
In my life, there's been no one like her, not a soul
Who can make my heart bleed.
It's just her that I need.
In my life, she was someone who brightened my life
But she'll die.
But she'll die.

A House Full of Love

To the tune of A Heart Full of Love

SEVERUS looks up at the house and presses his palms against it as LILY and JAMES embrace.

SEVERUS
A house full of love.
A joy-ridden place
That spits upon the Dark Lord's face.
Oh, God, how could
I ever have such wondrous good?
My life is hell.
They've a home,
I've a cell.

JAMES
A house full of love
No fear, not a trace
My Lily, you are all I need.

SEVERUS (angrily)
He's a disgrace!
Disgrace! He's such a filthy rake!
He's not her type!

LILY (to JAMES)
I agree, I can't gripe.

SEVERUS
A house full of love

JAMES and LILY
Our child's lovely home,
And yet wherever we may roam,
Our love will stay.

SEVERUS
Their sweet love runs far too deep.

JAMES
Do I dream?

SEVERUS (sadistically)
You'll soon sleep!

LILY
A house full of love.

SEVERUS
She was never mine to have.

LILY and JAMES
A life we can lead
Whether our hearts will beat or bleed,
Our need we'll feed.

SEVERUS
How could I hope to have a chance?
These are words I'll never hear.
Not from her.

LILY and JAMES
We needn't fear.

SEVERUS
Not from her.
Not from her.

ALL
And it's clear…
Wherever we/they may go…
You/He will be there,
At my/her side.

Report on Godric's Hollow

To the tune of Attack on Rue Plumet

SEVERUS snaps out of his reverie and convulsively slaps himself.

SEVERUS
Merlin,
What am I thinking?
Being such a bloody sap?
It must be too much drinking,
Wake up, Sev'rus, old chap!
You remember the Dark Lord just wants to know if they suspect
If he can surprise attack or if himself he should protect.
Alright, back to the Dark Lord
I'll tell him what I know
He'll do all that he wants to
Their child will have to go.
Poor Lily, though. What of her fate?
No time to think of that, I've gotta Apparate.

He twists around and appears back at VOLDEMORT's side.

SEVERUS
I went down there
They don't suspect that you'll come
They think that Peter's been true
Dear God, they really are dumb.
You'll have the boy dead.
Let Lily go, she needn't die at your hand
I do not think fear of death is something she can withstand
James can die instead.

VOLDEMORT
I guess the girl
Needn't be killed
For victory to be fulfilled.
We'll get our way
Both fools will die
You can have
The Mudblood hussy.
Lily Potter is yours, once I've killed off the kid
You can re-educate her.
Just make sure if she fights when you come to her side
That you eliminate her.

SEVERUS
I know, my Lord,
I promise. Your will always comes first.
You can kill the boy and James
I'll take Lily for myself.

VOLDEMORT
You needn't fear
I'll let her go.
Take care, though, Snape,
If she resists, she'll die.
Just stick around
I'll be back soon.
If I'm not back, you'll know the reason why.

SEVERUS
Good luck, my Lord.
I hope that you succeed.

VOLDEMORT
No need for hope,
I'm sure I'll make the Potters bleed.
Oh, this is brilliant, what an absolute joy
To take my victory just by killing some baby boy.
We will win finally!
I'll triumph, I knew it!
I'll triumph, I knew it!
Severus, wait. You saw them there.
Was there a guard around their lair?

SEVERUS
No, no, my Lord
There was no guard
They can be beaten
It isn't hard.
But they're both smart,
And have their skill
But they can't stand
Up to your will.
Lord Voldemort,
Everything's right
You can defeat
Both of the fools
The dark will beat
Their precious light
My Lord, you'll win!

VOLDEMORT smiles and picks up a glass from the table and hands it to Severus, magicking a drink into it.

VOLDEMORT
Well, Severus,
Let's drink a toast to success.
If all goes well, we'll have the Potter's heads tonight.
And fear not, you'll get your reward.
Lily shall be yours when I'm done.
Our side shall win and the light shall die.
You'll get your own when the dark side has won.

SEVERUS
Thank you, my Lord,
I give my thanks
For all you've done to make me strong.
I'm proud to be among your ranks
I don't care if they think we're wrong.
Good luck, my Lord, you'll have your victory now.
You'll have that prophecy undone before this night's done.
Good luck, my Lord, I will not keep you anymore,
I just hope you can tell
That I, my Lord, give you my wishes for the best
And hope you give them hell!

VOLDEMORT smiles evilly at him and Apparates away.

One Death More

To the tune of One Day More

VOLDEMORT appears outside Godric's Hollow and starts walking lazily towards it.

VOLDEMORT
One death more…
One final coup,
My really greatest win
In my fight for the spite
Of Slytherin.
This boy they say will make me die
Shall be dead ere they prophesy.
One death more.

LILY and JAMES, who still do not know he's coming, stand blissfully over the crib in their house.

LILY and JAMES
Our child, our little baby boy
He will grow up to be a hero.

VOLDEMORT
One death more.

LILY and JAMES
He gives us both such wondrous joy
And yet, his fate has become clear, though.

Back at VOLDEMORT's headquarters, SEVERUS sits in thought.

SEVERUS
One more death before we win.

LILY and JAMES
We will raise our boy together.

SEVERUS
One more death, I get what I seek.

LILY and JAMES
He was born to help the good.

SEVERUS
What a girl she might have been.

LILY and JAMES
And we hope that's understood.

SEVERUS
But she married someone weak.

VOLDEMORT
One more death before it ends

SEVERUS
Can I look her in the face?

VOLDEMORT
When our battle is concluded.

SEVERUS
When I sent her son to death?

VOLDEMORT
When I and all of my friends…

SEVERUS
When I caused James' dying breath?

VOLDEMORT
Rally in the Dark Mark's wake?

The DEATH EATERS sing as disembodied voices as the Dark Mark rises behind VOLDEMORT.

DEATH EATERS
The time is now!
We soon will win!

VOLDEMORT
One death more!
One more death below the Dark Mark,
Then the light side gets the shove.
I will take all that they cherish,
I will rape all that they love!

PETTIGREW
Watch him win the fight!
See him kill the fools!
Voldemort will soon be he who
Makes the rules!
Loyalty is what
Voldemort enjoys.
All of us Death Eaters
Run with the big boys!

SEVERUS, VOLDEMORT
One more death and we are winners!

LILY and JAMES
We have nothing we must fear!

SEVERUS, VOLDEMORT
The dark side will have its day!

DEATH EATERS
The dark side will have its day!

SEVERUS, VOLDEMORT
See the power of the sinners?

DEATH EATERS
This day, power will be ours!
Do you hear the serpents hiss?

SEVERUS
I fight with him,
My side is dark!

VOLDEMORT
One death more…

LILY and JAMES
We will not let the dark side win!

SEVERUS
One more death is my reward!

VOLDEMORT
I will show the Mudbloods power,
I will flatten Dumbledore!
One death more!

PETTIGREW
Watch him win the fight!
See him kill the fools!
Voldemort will soon be he who
Makes the rules!
Loyalty is what
Voldemort enjoys.
All of us Death Eaters
Run with the big boys!

VOLDEMORT
I'll be ready for the Potters!

SEVERUS
The child stands against my lust.

VOLDEMORT
The child will lie in the dust!

DEATH EATERS
The child is the most important death that happens in this war!

LILY and JAMES
One more life…

VOLDEMORT, DEATH EATERS, SEVERUS
One more death!

ALL
One death more!

VOLDEMORT arrives at the Potters' door and kicks it in as the music crescendos and ends and the Dark Mark rises into the sky.

At the Hog's Head

To the tune of At the Barricade

The scene is the aftermath of Voldemort's defeat. The Death Eaters, including JUGSON, MULCIBER, BELLATRIX, LESTRANGE, RABASTAN and SEVERUS are all hiding in the basement of the Hog's Head, where they are scheming about how to find Voldemort.

BELLATRIX
Here inside this pub
We will make our proper plan
About how we will find the Lord that we revere
We may be beat, but we'll do what we can
Yes! We will bring our Lord back without one trace of fear!

SEVERUS
I can help you, my friends
I knew the house
Told him the
Prophecy.
I will help him return!

BELLATRIX
You're a cowardly mite!
Out of my sight!
You have caused naught but blight!
Some say you help the light!

LESTRANGE
Bellatrix, dear, calm yourself now.
Severus only wants to aid.

SEVERUS
I know that you're upset, Bella
Still, I resent being called afraid.
I'll leave if that's what you desire
I'll leave at once and not look back.

BELLATRIX (sneers)
Knew you were weak and spineless, Snape
Get going now, you'd better pack.

RABASTAN (interrupts BELLATRIX)
There is a way that he could help.
None of the light side knows he's here.
He could spy on them for our side
I think the purpose is quite clear.
As Occlumens,
Snape has no peer.

SEVERUS (bitterly)
I will not trouble you, friends
It is clear that you don't want my help.
You think I'm naught but a weakling, a fool.
Just a poor wretched whelp.
Well, you'll regret letting me go.

BELLATRIX
You couldn't do a thing to us!

SEVERUS
You have my word
That I'll do all I can to get help for our cause
I have already showed great disregard for the highest of laws.
Without me, you can do your best
But you'll be captured, like the rest!

RODOLPHUS
Severus Snape, you should not be our foe
We have fought for the dark
It is not only a scar that we bear
Of that evilest mark.
Do not refuse us your aid in this fight
Just forget Bellatrix
We all do know that you want our Lord back,
That you want this mess fixed.
We hope that we will see you soon
With our Dark Lord.

SEVERUS
Save your shit, Rodolphus
It makes me bored.

He leaves the Hog's Head and walks out into the street, where he Apparates away, arriving in Spinner's End.

All Alone

To the tune of On My Own

SEVERUS sits down in a cheap chair and begins to contemplate his options.

SEVERUS
And now I've lost my chance at love
No one to care
No one to cherish
Without a friend, it isn't fair,
Without some caring, I might perish.
And now my love is dead
Now I can only hate instead.

Sometimes I think about that girl,
She made me feel so weak and silly
I never dreamed that I would fall for
A dumb mudblood like miss Lily.
But now I see her face
So filled with hope and joy and grace.

All alone
That's my fate as a person
None condone
My actions, which just worsen
Without her
I know I'll stay unhappy
Although I have been trained
To think that love was simply sappy.

To my pain, Lord Voldemort gave healing
He helped hate protect me from my feelings.
It was power that let me stop my weakness
What's left to me is villainy, which leaves no room for meekness.

And I know
I gave the Dark Lord names
Which identified Lily and her spouse
But I know
I had to finish James
As revenge for my taunted house!

I loved her
But hatred for her husband
Made me kill
Remorse was not an option.
Without her,
There's nothing left but hatred
Which tears my soul to tiny shreds
And lives on, unabated.

(voice breaking) I loved her!
But James destroyed my loving!
With his taunts,
His pushing and his shoving!
Without him,
I would have lived with Lily
And my great lack of happiness
Would have shrunk and not grown!

I loved her
I loved her
But now I'm all alone.

He Apparates back to Hogsmeade, where he begins a slow, steady tread back up to the castle.

Back at the Hog's Head

To the tune of Build the Barricade

The DEATH EATERS are still planning their attack. As of now, they have settled on using the Longbottoms as a target. CROUCH JR. has joined them.

DEATH EATERS
We can use our strength
To catch the Longbottoms.

BELLATRIX
We are stronger than both of those
Blood traitor Aurors!

CROUCH JR.
We'll have our revenge on those filthy bums.

LESTRANGE
It's our turn in battle to settle some scores.

BELLATRIX
This is our first attack
And if we are caught and sent to Azkaban
We will only be glad we
Dreamed up this plan.
There is naught that we lack,
Let's attack!

They Apparate away, arriving outside the Longbottoms' house. The DEATH EATERS hastily surround the house, with BELLATRIX facing the door. She casts the Sonorus charm on her voice.

BELLATRIX
Frank, Alice Longbottom
Come out at once
We are the followers of Voldemort
You are outmanned
If you should fight
Your lives we'd all abort.

FRANK and ALICE LONGBOTTOM come out of the house, staring defiantly at BELLATRIX.

FRANK
Damn the Dark Arts
That you flaunt
We won't give you what you want!

ALICE
Damn your power!
You are blind
You're a shame upon our kind!

The LONGBOTTOMS are dragged away by the DEATH EATERS into the woods.

Severus' Betrayal

To the tune of Javert's Arrival

As the DEATH EATERS are torturing the LONGBOTTOMS, there is a sudden scuffle in the bushes nearby. One or two of the DEATH EATERS turn their wand on the source of the noise only to discover SEVERUS walking towards them, calmly as can be.

SEVERUS
Listen, my friends
Aurors are on the way
They know that you are here
They are armed to the hilt
There is blood to be spilt.
Listen at once,
You have much you can lose
Leave the Longbottoms here
We must flee from this clearing
Right now, is that clear?!

BELLATRIX
Well, Snape,
If you know that they're coming, save your scrawny neck
There are ways REAL Death Eaters can fight
We don't care about these Aurors!

SEVERUS
Fine, then, you can just get killed
They'll be arriving anytime
They intend to arrest you
For this, your latest brilliant crime.
I can stay and kill
These blood traitor slime.

A VOICE comes from behind him and in a minute, sixteen wands are trained on the DEATH EATERS

VOICE (spoken)
I don't think so.

Evil Wizards

To the tune of Little People

The VOICE belongs to MAD-EYE MOODY, who is holding a wand to SEVERUS' head.

MOODY
Well, look at these Death Eaters,
A collection of scum
If you thought you could get away
You really are dumb
'Cause I won't let a one of you
Get out of my reach
Because the laws you stupid evil wizards
All breach.

You evil wizards lose
Because your evil lies
And when its bluff gets beaten,
Then your evil dies.
So don't fool with Aurors
Because you think we're weak
We use our battle training with a vicious streak
And it's scum like you who torture that we're trained to seek.

BELLATRIX spits on MOODY.

BELLATRIX
Bravo, Mad-Eye Moody
With your prosthetic eye
You think that with your laws
Purebloods all will comply?
I spit on your sermons
You're a fool and a shit
You think that you're a hot shot,
But you're just full of it!

MOODY
Take this bitch and have her questioned
You are all under arrest

He sneers at BELLATRIX

Tell me, why have you been captured
If you really are the best?

BELLATRIX
Your whole Auror corps is shoddy
And your inner weakness shows
I would take life from your body
Like Rosier took your nose!

She is dragged off, along with all the other DEATH EATERS, except SEVERUS.

MOODY (to SEVERUS)
Clever move, my little turncoat
Got us all the time we need
But your friends have caused some Aurors
With brilliant records all to bleed.
I won't hide my disgust
You will never have my trust.

SEVERUS doesn't react. He merely Apparates away while MOODY bends over the bodies of FRANK and ALICE LONGBOTTOM.

A Little Bit of Pain

To the tune of A Little Fall of Rain

MOODY
What were
Those bastards doing?
My friends, are you alright?
Are you badly injured?
Did you put up a fight?

FRANK (as his sanity slips away)
We took Cruciatus hard
We never had a moment's rest
It was so damn painful
It really put us to the test.

MOODY
Frank, Alice, what's wrong?
You seem so dazed, as though your brains are dead
You've been ill-used, you need quick help
Just please, don't lose your head.

ALICE
Don't be scared,
My friend, Alastor
We'll only go insane
A little bit of pain
Can only break our minds
Just please…
For our poor Neville's sake
Make sure our child stays safe
Make sure our child has hope,
For now our psyches have to break.

MOODY
You'll be alright, my friends!
You will, I swear!
We're getting St. Mungo's
To give you care.

FRANK
It's far too late
Let us sleep
We will sleep
Far too deep

MOODY
You'll survive with sanity
If it's the last I do
I won't abandon you.

FRANK
The pain they put us through…
The pain has finished with our minds
Just keep our child safe,
Just give our child hope
And we will leave our lives behind.

The pain they made us feel
Was hell-in-life
It made our nerves all reel
With so much strife.
We've gone away
From damaged brains
We suffered such great strains.

(simultaneous with below)
So don't be scared, dear friend, Alastor
I'll simply lose my brain
A little bit of pain
Can only break my mind

MOODY (simultaneous with above)
Do not fear, fellow Aurors
You were these bastards' bane.
A little bit of pain
Will never break your minds.
You're safe.

ALICE
The horror only grew.
(simultaneous with below)
Just keep our child safe
Just give our child hope

MOODY (simultaneous with above)
I will stay with you
Til doctors get here.
The pain…

LONGBOTTOMS
The pain…

MOODY
Won't manage…

LONGBOTTOMS
Won't manage…(blankly) who are you?

MOODY blinks back silent tears at the loss of his friends and walks away from the now insane LONGBOTTOMS.

Trial of Anguish

To the tune of Night of Anguish

The scene slowly shifts to the Wizengamot, with CROUCH's voice in the background.

CROUCH
These acts are dark and fell
They are the darkest acts
That one could perpetrate…

The scene has now shifted fully to the Wizengamot. MOODY, DUMBLEDORE, CROUCH et al. are seated in their seats, staring disdainfully down at the chained chairs. MRS. CROUCH is crying softly.

CROUCH (cont)
These are the guilty ones
They used a curse so cruel
That it shows naught but hate.

We try them for these crimes
We avenge the insane
We must now seal their fate.

Tragic music starts as DEMENTORS glide in, guiding BELLATRIX, RABASTAN, RODOLPHUS and CROUCH JR. The four DEATH EATERS sit in the chairs, but CROUCH JR stares wildly up at his father.

CROUCH JR.
I didn't do it, father, please!

CROUCH
Their crimes they have confessed.
With resurrecting You-Know-Who
These bastards were obsessed.

CROUCH JR.
I wasn't with these criminals!

CROUCH
You rat, don't try to lie!
The crimes that you caused to occur
You can't hope to deny!

MRS. CROUCH
You must not be so hard on him.
Oh, can't you hear him cry?

CROUCH
Don't be fooled by his lying tears
He's far too dark and sly.
(spoken) All those in favor of life sentencing?

The entire court rises. CROUCH JR. starts to scream.

CROUCH JR
Why must you be so damn unjust?
Why am I so maligned?
You bastard, father, I'm your son!

CROUCH
You are no son of mine!

The DEMENTORS glide back in as the court cheers. Slowly, the scene changes so that it is merely a scene being observed by Dumbledore through his Pensieve. It is 1994. We come closer to the Pensieve, where the scene is changing to a rat running across woodland. Slowly, we enter the Pensieve, joining the rat in its journey.

The First Victim

To the tune of The First Attack

The rat, which is PETTIGREW, scampers along the ground as the music plays, finally coming to a stop on a cobble-stone street. The scene is Albania. PETTIGREW morphs back into a human and moves towards the nearest restaurant. Once inside, however, he bumps into a portly witch, who happens to be none other than BERTHA JORKINS.

JORKINS
What, Peter Pettigrew?!
God, how can it be you?!
You're supposed to be dead,
I find you here instead.

PETTIGREW
Please don't be too afraid,
I will do you no harm.
Let us take a quick stroll.
Here, take hold of my arm.

They leave the restaurant and start walking toward the forest.

JORKINS
How did you stay alive?
We saw Black cast that curse.

PETTIGREW
I have my powers.

He pulls out his wand and points it at her temple.

But now, we must depart
To the woods up ahead.

JORKINS
What are you doing, man?!
I'm with the Ministry!

PETTIGREW
Don't look for my support,
I work for Voldemort!

(spoken) Now come on, you stupid hag! Move, now! We have a Dark Lord to resurrect!

(sung) He's somewhere in the woods…

As they get deep into the woods, a disembodied VOICE comes from somewhere up ahead.

VOICE
Wormtail, my friend,
You've come back to your Lord at last.
In future, though,
Could you be a bit more fast?

PETTIGREW
No fear, my Lord,
I have a victim for you.
Miss Jorkins here…

The VOICE is VOLDEMORT, of course, and he floats out from behind a tree. He leers at JORKINS, who nearly faints.

VOLDEMORT
Welcome, my dear.
Wormtail, I swear
I'm proud of you.
Just bring her here…

JORKINS glares at her captors, a spark of defiance returning to her eyes.

JORKINS
Once a rat, you're always a rat!
I don't fear you pair of scum!
You're a wizard and a ghost
And I swear, I won't succumb.
Kill me now, if you're so strong
You won't have your strength for long
You're both fighting for what's wrong.

VOLDEMORT
You're a fool.
Like all the light side's fools.
I am more
Than any ghost or man.
You will talk
Or else you'll die in horror
For here there are no Aurors
To help you in your hour of need
We'll make you talk, or make you bleed.
You won't come out of this alive,
So you can make your certain death very quick
No doubt, you have a lot to say.

VOLDEMORT flies into PETTIGREW's head, possessing him instantly.

PETTIGREW
Now, Miss Jorkins, tell us all
Do not attempt to scream or cry
Voldemort can tell if you
Say a mistruth or even try
To relate a lie.
Be quick and you can die.

Speak to Me

To the tune of Drink With Me

VOLDEMORT begins to speak through PETTIGREW's mouth as he raises his wand and begins to torture JORKINS.

PETTIGREW (in VOLDEMORT's voice)
Speak to me
And tell no lies
Tell to me
What you may know.

You're a vermin who
Slows down those who're great
I determine you
Shall face a dark fate.
Tell me all,
And don't be slow.

Speak to me
And do not lie
Don't be coy.
I'm far too sly.
Keep your pleas for mercy,
Just tell me all
I can torture you,
As you may recall.
All my strength
You can't deny.

Speak to me
And do not lie.
Tell me of the world I've missed.
Since my life's eternal
Here I must lurk
But my strength's infernal,
Pain is my work.
I'll continue to exist!

JORKINS
I don't care if I should die,
But the torture is too much
Life at this point is a version of hell
There is only so much that I can tell
I will tell you truth and such.

She slowly begins to recount what she found out about CROUCH's son. As she does so, a flashback occurs. We are in the home of the CROUCHES. MRS. CROUCH is lying on a couch, dying. CROUCH is hunched over her, doing his best to care for her.

Rescue Him

To the tune of Bring Him Home

MRS. CROUCH
Barty Crouch…
Husband, dear.
I will die
Save my son
While I'm here.

He's our child
He's in pain -
I can tell.
He's in hell.
Rescue him.
Rescue him.
Rescue him.

He's just a child who did wrong
I'll take his place to save his soul
The Dementors
Took their toll.
Just please restore
How he smiled.
From Azkaban,
Rescue our child!

Bring him hope
Save his mind
In your work
You have left him behind.

Please obey
My last wish
Save him
His anguish!
I will die. Yes, I'll die!
Grant my wish!
Rescue him!
Rescue him!
Rescue him!

As MRS. CROUCH concludes her song, the scene shifts back to the Albanian forest. PETTIGREW smiles before killing JORKINS. He Apparates away, arriving outside the CROUCH household.

End of Anguish

To the tune of Dawn of Anguish

PETTIGREW breaks the door down on the CROUCH household and stuns CROUCH before walking into the living room and discovering CROUCH JR, still under the influence of the Imperius curse. VOLDEMORT speaks through PETTIGREW's voice.

VOLDEMORT
You've been imprisoned, friend.
You were abandoned by me when I fell that night.
Your suffering will end.
For I will not abandon you in our dark fight.
Let us not mince words
Let all your powers and lack of a conscience
Aid my might.
(spoken) Finite!

CROUCH JR begins to stir, his mind now free.

VOLDEMORT
Speak to me,
My faithful friend
Tell to me
All that you've done.

CROUCH JR
My dark master,
Thank God that you have come.
Now we'll move much faster
Against the scum.
I'll become just like your son.

The Second Victim/The Death of Crouch

To the tune of The Second Attack/The Death of Gavroche

Flash forward. It is now the days before the Third task of the Triwizard tournament. HARRY and KRUM are walking through the Hogwarts grounds, when suddenly CROUCH bursts out of a bush.

CROUCH
Please get me Dumbledore! I need his help right now.
There's something to occur that he cannot allow!
It's my son - it's all my fault
Blame all that's occurred on me!
Bertha Jorkins - she's my fault
I need help, and urgently!

KRUM stays behind while HARRY rushes up to the school. CROUCH JR, disguised as MOODY, knocks him out.

CROUCH JR
Oh, really now father, why take such a chance?
Your attempts to inform on me have been in vain.
You'll die now, so do not try to run.
It's high time I made sure you were slain!
You'll disappear quickly, with naught for your pains!

CROUCH
You can make your empty threat.
They'll return in time to help.
You have not won this fight yet!

CROUCH JR (Spoken)
Expelliarmus!

CROUCH is knocked back against a tree, where he tries slowly to get up.

CROUCH
Evil wizards lie
And evil wizards cheat
The fate of evil wizards is naught but defeat.

CROUCH JR (spoken)
Crucio!

CROUCH
AHHH!
You'll lose in every fight
Your evil will not last.

CROUCH JR
Crucio!

CROUCH
GAH!
Your Dark Lord's try for power
Will be beaten fast.
So you won't win one damn battle
When I breathe my…

CROUCH JR
Avada Kedavra!

CROUCH drops dead and CROUCH JR picks him up, carrying him into the woods just as HARRY arrives back.

The Final Victim

To the tune of The Final Battle

The scene flash forwards to the third task of the Triwizard Tournament. Sinister music plays as the four champions line up. DUMBLEDORE steps forward to give them their instructions.

DUMBLEDORE
Triwizard champions, give me your ears
The maze that you enter is booby-trapped
The first to touch the cup will win
Now go. Good luck to all.

CROUCH JR, disguised as Moody, stands in the background, smiling at the proceedings.

CROUCH JR
Now the time when we will win
Potter's win will be short
He will bring back my Lord,
He will bring back Voldemort.
Now let us watch as they proceed.
The end will soon occur.

The four CHAMPIONS enter the maze. An instrumental plays as they run through it. FLEUR is stunned by CROUCH JR, who then casts the Imperius curse on KRUM, who goes after CEDRIC. HARRY saves CEDRIC, and they reach the cup together. As the music for "Green and Grey" plays, CEDRIC and HARRY grasp the cup together and are magically transported to the graveyard.

Flesh, Blood and Bone

To the tune of Dog Eats Dog

A long instrumental occurs as the Portkey arrives in the graveyard, carrying HARRY and CEDRIC. PETTIGREW and VOLDEMORT watch as the two students make their way around the graveyard, trying to discover where they are. After the instrumental is over, it abruptly changes as PETTIGREW exits the crypt he has been hiding in and kills CEDRIC.

PETTIGREW
Silly Hufflepuff,
Stuck here in this place.
Poor little brat,
He won't be bothering us now.
Hello, Potter, glad you're here.
Get against the stone!
Get against the grave!
Here among the graves and tombs,
We have a lot to do
All with a little help from you.

He ties HARRY to the gravestone.

PETTIGREW (cont)
Well, someone had to make you pay, you brat
Voldemort is waiting
We just have to make him live
You are gonna bring him back just like that
Sorry, Potter, you've been shivved.

He pulls out the bundle and unwraps it, exposing VOLDEMORT in his twisted, baby form.

VOLDEMORT
Hurry up, Wormtail
If this process fails
You will wish you were dead
'Cause I'll make you feel such pain
Get the bone, the blood and flesh
Get this process through
Drop me in the stew!
I'm through with being weakened
And unable to cast spells.
But I'm now about to rise.

Well, someone had to bring me back, it seems
Before my famous exploits
Disappeared into the past
Someone had to fulfill this world's worst dreams
With the curses I can cast.

PETTIGREW begins the process of collecting the ingredients.

PETTIGREW
The bone of the father's corpse
Will be put in the potion's mix
The flesh of the servant
Will come from my hand…
God, it hurts, but I'll get my reward.
And now the blood right out of Potter…
Will mix with the brew
We've made…
The evil brew
We've made!

VOLDEMORT is dropped into the cauldron and PETTIGREW collapses on the ground, whimpering as VOLDEMORT rises from the cauldron, his skeletal form now completely recreated.

Voldemort's Return

To the tune of Javert's Suicide

VOLDEMORT steps out of the cauldron and surveys his surroundings with glee, his slitlike nostrils flaring.

VOLDEMORT
I'm back at last
This rebirth has at last transpired
My faithful servant cowers underfoot.
It's all I desired
And now, Wormtail, where's my wand.

PETTIGREW hands VOLDEMORT his wand.

VOLDEMORT
Now hold out your arm for my use.

WORMTAIL
Master, my thanks.

VOLDEMORT
The other arm, you fool…
We have some friends
That we will have to meet.
I'll show no mercy when they come
It's time for vengeance!

Turns to HARRY

Ah, our little friend.
Back down, Harry,
For I shall take your life
Despair, Harry!
I'll bring back all the strife!

HARRY (overlapping with VOLDEMORT)
I'm not afraid
You do not frighten me.
You are pathetic, Thomas M. Riddle!

The DEATH EATERS begin to arrive. VOLDEMORT sweeps around the circle, smiling evilly.

VOLDEMORT
Welcome, my friends,
It's been thirteen years, they say
Yet still you answer my call
As though this were yesterday.

But I confess that I am
Disappointed with you
None gave a damn
When all my power was through.
Perhaps you thought
That I really was gone?
I who have used
Magic to go on and on?!

You are all fools
I should have you all killed
You are all rats
I should make you all bleed.
I still lived on
But you never gave help
You let me rot in my hour of need!
You denied me your useful support
You have trifled with Lord Voldemort!

But I am merciful enough
To let you live and prove yourselves
Your foolishness won't have forgiveness
I never forgive
I forget nothing.
You should all perish in this yard
But I'll relent.
I will relent against your sins.
You'll be redeemed
When our side wins.

And my power is great
I shall kill our last foe
Potter's here in our circle
And now he has to go!

So never ever show the doubt
You showed when I was almost beat
My life won't end, you must believe that!
The Lord you know now will live forever.
And even though I should have died,
I still could cope.
And now in front of all of you,
I'll vanquish the light side's last hope!

In this duel I shall fight
Potter shan't escape my wrath
You shall see that the dark side
Is the truly winning path.

I am back now,
And it's clear
That as far as you're concerned
There is nothing left to fear,
For at last I have returned!

The music of "Spite" explodes as VOLDEMORT prepares to kill HARRY, who grabs the Portkey and vanishes. VOLDEMORT screams with rage as the Dark Mark rises into the sky.

Learning

To the tune of Turning

The scene changes to the faculty room of Hogwarts. DUMBLEDORE and MCGONAGALL are sitting together and discussing the fact that Voldemort is back.

DUMBLEDORE
We must deal
With this latest threat.
We don't know if
The Dark Lord is planning action yet.

MCGONAGALL
Can we fight him?

DUMBLEDORE
We will have to try.
Severus can go back
To behaving as our spy.

Voldemort will have to be denied.

MCGONAGALL
We can stop him
If we act with care
We won't have much help, though
Since nobody is aware.

DUMBLEDORE
People will ignore us
For the time.
But we should be prepared
To take action on a dime.
Voldemort could cause a heinous crime.

MCGONAGALL
In this battle
We must use our skill

DUMBLEDORE
Every year, there's more to save -
More blood the dark can spill.

MCGONAGALL
Damn Cornelius,
He should have discerned
We were giving warning
And we shouldn't have been spurned.

BOTH
Learning, learning, learning Voldemort's returned!
Learning, learning Voldemort's returned.
Into a whole second war the circumstance has turned.
Fight the battle, fight it man for man
We can do so little while we formulate a plan.
Still, we must do everything we can.

Empty Fights for Fool Ideals

To the tune of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables

SEVERUS, meanwhile, is debating which side to fight for now that VOLDEMORT is back and he has his chance at power again.

SEVERUS
I'm relieved he wasn't beaten.
Now we'll settle every score.
Empty fights for fool ideals
Aren't enough to win a war.

I must choose which side to fight with
In this newest, greatest fight.
I must hand out my allegiance
To the darkness or the light.

On the light side or the dark side,
I would be used as a spy
But the spy would know who's winning
I can see it now -
The very act of being spy
Is living out a huge lie.
It's the lonely kind of job I love.

Dumbledore, you once forgave me.
You allowed me to escape.
You had claimed I was a hero
You exonerated Snape.

Voldemort, you were my hero
You were all I wished to be
You were one whose great ideals
Had some faint appeal for me!

Oh, Dark Lord, Dark Lord, I've waited
For the day I'd serve again.
Empty fights for fool ideals
Can be fought by other men.

He rolls up his sleeve and smiles at his Dark Mark. Then, he leaves Hogwarts and Apparates to meet VOLDEMORT.

The Spy Returns

To the tune of Every Day

SEVERUS arrives in the graveyard. VOLDEMORT is still there, but the other DEATH EATERS have left.

VOLDEMORT
I'm surprised
That you would show your face
I thought you'd know your place
And come much quicker.

SEVERUS
My Dark Lord,
I promise, my Dark Lord
I only waited this long to fool with Dumbledore.

VOLDEMORT
I thought you'd left me, Severus.
I didn't think you would come back.
You still maintain loyalty?

SEVERUS
I do, and I have still spied faithfully.
Faithfully
I've remembered my place
There's much you'll hear from me.

VOLDEMORT
You are full of news?
You spied all these years?
This news, my friend, it quite endears.
I must seem rude.
You have my deepest gratitude,
Severus Snape.
You are in a fine shape.
Your heart's full of hate,
No love and no shame.
You've served your master very well,
I bless your name!
You were still fighting
For our side
Fighting for me,
For my cause.
For my name.
Well, then, you will not take my blame.

SEVERUS (overlapping with VOLDEMORT)
I was never on their side
I still hated all they preached
I am your spy until I die
Thought I teached and I teached,
I was full of hate.
And I return to your side!

Severus' Vow

To the tune of Valjean's Confession

Flash forward to Spinner's End. NARCISSA is running through the streets, with BELLATRIX in hot pursuit.

BELLATRIX
Cissy, you must recall
He doesn't know the plan
You cannot give your trust
To this disgusting man.

His loyalty's not real
As far as I'm concerned.
He hasn't proved himself
As an effective spy
You can't get him to help
It's better not to try!

NARCISSA
Shut up, I will not hear you, sis.
I won't have Draco die like this!

She knocks on the door - SEVERUS answers it in surprise.

SEVERUS
Narcissa, what on earth?

NARCISSA
Just let me enter please.
I need to get your help,
I beg you on my knees.
Just let me in your house.

SEVERUS
I'll let you in, of course.
Please tell me all your fears
I'll help you all I can
Our friendship is quite clear.
Your tears can stop.

NARCISSA comes in and begins to relate her troubles to SEVERUS

NARCISSA
My son was told he must kill Dumbledore
He doesn't know the horrid fate in store
He doesn't have the strength or skill
He doesn't have the heart to kill
Someone else.
He'll be destroyed if he does not succeed
Some help from someone else is what he needs.

SEVERUS
I'll help your son to succeed now.

NARCISSA
But will you make a solemn vow?
The one that you could never break
Is the vow I wish you to make.
Will you help?
Will you help?

SEVERUS
Yes, for your sake.
What can I do
That will help Draco to make
Dumbledore's blood spilt?
Whatever you wish me to do for
Your son I will do with no guilt.

NARCISSA
Kill him if Draco can't do it!
Make sure he's destroyed!
If he survives this attempt on his life,
I will be overjoyed.
Promise me, my friend, that you will help Draco.

SEVERUS
I make the vow.

NARCISSA
That you will help him finish his foe?

SEVERUS
We both know Dumbledore will have to go.

The Waltz of Plotting

To the tune of The Wedding Chorale

The scene changes to Slughorn's party, where a group of GUESTS are milling around, including DRACO and SNAPE.

GUESTS
Bring out the drinks so we can have a toast!
Thank God for Slughorn and his great Slug Club.
He picked the students who will do the most.
There's no accomplishment that he will snub.

SEVERUS (spoken)
Draco, may I have a word with you?

A sleazy waltz begins to play as SEVERUS brings DRACO into a side room.

SEVERUS
I must ask,
How's your task?
Are you making progress towards the kill?

DRACO
Piss off, sir
And be sure
I am following the Dark Lord's will.

SEVERUS
Draco, I made a vow
Acting alone's something I won't allow.
Don't be thick. I'm not a prick.
I am trying to give you help now.

DRACO
Don't feed bullshit to me.
Your stool-pigeon I will never be.

SEVERUS
You've learned Occlumency…
When I look at you, I just see a frightened child
I am offering you aid. You're on my side!
Now tell me, while you can,
What Aunt Bellatrix has taught you to hide!

DRACO
You have lust
For my trust
You can't help me do all that I must!
You wish to do my job
I won't let you, you greasy-haired slob!

I am in
Perfect shape
Without listening to your orders, Snape!

SNAPE
You are being absurd!

DRACO
I don't care about your silky words!
My job's not your concern
And your help's something I wish to spurn
Can this meeting adjourn?

SEVERUS
Pity you're not willing to cooperate
I know that you're not in the most well-thought out state.
You've tried some truly inane attacks.

DRACO
Get off my back!

SEVERUS
You've been breaking the rules.

DRACO
Use detention, that's one of your tools!

SEVERUS
You have misunderstood
We both know that detention's no good.
I will not punish you
But you need to get some kind of clue!

DRACO
Get away.
That's enough!
If you want to give me your help, tough.
I'm okay.
I am fine.
This task isn't your job, it is mine!
Is that all?
Can I leave?

SEVERUS
Your belligerence I can't believe!
You're not being bright
Trying to fight
Someone who wants to aid in your plight.
We can leave
This side
But don't blame me if you meet your doom!

Dumbledore Is Beat

To the tune of Beggars at the Feast

The scene shifts to the Lightning-Struck tower, where the DEATH EATERS are gathered and sneering at DUMBLEDORE, who is now cornered. DRACO is trying to muster the courage to kill him.

DEATH EATERS
Isn't it sad?
Isn't it weak?
Dumbledore's future
Looks bloody bleak.
Stuck in this place
Soon to be killed
Our Dark Lord's
Orders are being fulfilled.
Let the bastard fry!
Let the bastard rot!
Let's kill him while we can,
None would be distraught!

Dumbledore is beat
Voldemort's on top
Soon the light side's power
Will just close up shop.
Everybody knows
With this bastard dead
Nobody could stop us
In all our bloodshed.

Kill the bastard right now, Draco
Let him feel the kiss of death
Our action toward this flake is
Laughing while he takes his
Final breath!
Let him fry in hell
Now our side will win
Gryffindor's been cornered
Now by Slytherin!
Albus Dumbledore
Soon will get his due
We will kick the asses
Of his Phoenix crew!

SEVERUS appears on the tower and the DEATH EATERS welcome him.

DEATH EATERS (cont)
Severus, you gotta see this!
Draco cannot cast the spell!
His wand he should be twirlin',
Merlin', he can't kill him, can't you tell?!

Epilogue/Finale

To the tune of the same name

SEVERUS steps forward, considering the situation. As he does so, his entire past comes back to haunt him.

SEVERUS
Alone I stand on this tower
I know the power that I now hold
I dared to hope we might succeed
Without my chance to make him bleed
I stand between the dark and light
Upon this tower, in this fight.
I must send him to his grave,
This boy to save.

The disembodied voice of LILY sounds in SEVERUS' mind.

LILY
Severus…
Hear my plea
Respect my
Memory
Let him live
Die yourself.
Save yourself.
Die for me.
Dumbledore…
Rescue him…

The disembodied voices of SIRIUS and JAMES sound in SEVERUS' mind

JAMES (simultaneous with below)
You bastard, Snivellus
You bastard, you can't kill him.
You're just a little shit
Who hasn't got the strength.

SIRIUS (simultaneous with above)
You're a filthy old snake!
Finish your ugly days!
You have ruined your life!

The voice of VOLDEMORT echoes in SEVERUS' mind.

VOLDEMORT
My friend, my friend
You must complete your task.
You are like me, a half-blood
With no shame.
You are, at last,
Allowed to get revenge.
Take it, take it and triumph in my name!
It's you who must destroy this useless fool!
It's you who must destroy his useless cause.
It's thanks to you that we're at this point.
And again, you get your revenge for your pain.
My friend, your power is assured
When I was destroyed,
You spied more faithfully than all
Gave me all I need
And let us once more kill!
Now you have won
You have the power
Now you can kill the fool
For your chance now has come.

BELLATRIX's voice sounds in SEVERUS' mind.

BELLATRIX
You tell lies!
You only told us lies!
I don't trust…don't trust you in this fight!
Yes, you snake, you ought to let him die
You have vowed, now comply!
Take this chance
To bring yourself redemption
Take it now
Upon this darkened tower.
You can be great
Or you can prove that I'm right
You either die for foolish love
Or kill him to get power!

The disembodied voice of NARCISSA sounds in SEVERUS' mind.

NARCISSA
Even if
You gave your help to Draco
Don't retract
Your vow, for heaven's sake, though.
Severus Snape,
He needs your help so sorely.
If you don't kill off Dumbledore,
You'll have lived your life poorly.

The voices of NARCISSA, BELLATRIX and VOLDEMORT join together

NARCISSA, BELLATRIX, VOLDEMORT
Do your job
You've earned your chance at glory
You're in charge
You pick your strength or weakness.

SEVERUS has made his decision. He faces DUMBLEDORE.

DUMBLEDORE
Severus, please…

DEATH EATERS
We have to do this quickly!

SEVERUS
I have made my decision
Avada Kedavra, die!

The scene goes eerily mute as DUMBLEDORE is blasted off the tower. SEVERUS and the other DEATH EATERS sweep off the tower. The scene fades away and changes to the Slytherin common room. It is completely empty, except for a Slytherin banner, which flaps in the wind as a CHORUS sings.

CHORUS
Do you hear the serpents hiss
Hissing their words of rage and pain
It is the hissing
Of the serpents who have everything to gain.

The CHORUS, which consists of Slytherin students, slowly emerges from the shadows of the common room and continues singing.

CHORUS (cont)
For the students of this house
There is an anger that persists
No one can have much else to live for
When just hate exists.

We will fight the persecution
We've endured for years on end
We are students who are hated
We're a house without a friend
From us there is hatred
For those who from Muggles descend!

We are each Lord Voldemort
Each has potential to be him
Every last prospect for our house
Is one that's dark or cruel or grim.
Do you hear the serpents hiss?
As the hissing intensifies,
It is the hissing that will sound
When the light side dies!

We are each a frightened child
Who could become the dark side's pawn
We would behave more pleasantly
If we were not so spat upon.
Do you hear the serpents hiss?
Do you hear all our vicious pride?
Hogwarts school only can succeed
When we're unified!

Be unified!

The students raise their wands as the serpent on the Slytherin banner turns to the audience and hisses.

Fin.
